If you are not going to engage with current and potential customers, do not Tweet.

This morning I pruned those I follow on Twitter in both my personal and company accounts. I was stunned to see how many retail oriented firms Tweet yet do not actively interact with their followers.

As a specific example, a friend of mine was looking to buy a new car. With my help we looked at some car dealers who actively Tweet “specials” and sent them both a regular (@) Tweet and a Direct (DM) Message. None of these dealers responded.

Based on this, my friend ruled out any of these dealers.

If you are going to use social networking to promote your business and to engage an audience, you must be responsive as otherwise, like my friend, you will lose business both directly and indirectly.
